Guide to Having a Lake Dog

If there’s one thing Whiskey and I look forward to every summer, it’s lake days. There’s nothing better than hopping on the pontoon, feeling the breeze on your face, and watching your dog experience the pure magic of being on the water. Whiskey, my one-year-old Golden Retriever, might have been born to be a lake dog. From splashing in the shallows to soaking up the sun on the boat’s deck, this pup has truly embraced the lake life.

Over the past year, I’ve picked up some tips and tricks that have made our boating adventures safe, fun, and stress-free. If you’re thinking about introducing your dog to lake life, here’s a guide to ensure that your time on the water is as golden as your pup.

Start Slow

If your dog is new to the lake, ease them in. Whiskey’s first few days on the lake were all about getting him comfortable. He spent time sniffing the boat, testing the water, and finding his sea legs.

Here’s how to help your dog adjust:
- Spend time near the shore at first.
- Don’t rush them onto the boat or into the water if they’re nervous.
- Allow them to explore at their own pace.
- Use treats and heaps of praise for encouragement!

Invest in a Dog Life Jacket
Even if your dog is a strong swimmer (like Whiskey is), always use a life jacket. It’s not just about swimming; it’s also about safety in case of fatigue, unexpected waves, or emergencies.

When choosing a life jacket for your dog:
- Opt for one with a sturdy handle on the back. It’s super handy if your dog decides to jump in mid-lake for yet another stick rescue.
- Ensure it fits snugly but comfortably, allowing free movement.

Bring the Essentials
A well-prepared dog parent means a happy pup! Here’s what I always pack for Whiskey on our lake days:

Fresh Water & a Bowl
Lake water isn’t suitable for drinking, so keep a big jug of fresh water for your dog.

Snacks & Treats
A busy lake day burns a lot of energy, so pack plenty of snacks to keep your furry friend fueled.

Towels
Wet dogs are inevitable. A couple of towels help dry them off (and prevent an all-out moisture attack on the boat).

Poop Bags
Good lake etiquette is key. Always clean up after your dog.

Secure Leash & Collar

These are essential for crowded docks or when disembarking.

Teach Boat Manners
Whiskey loves being on the pontoon, but it took practice to make him a polite passenger. Start with short trips to teach your dog how to settle when the boat is moving.

Tips for training boat manners:
- Encourage your dog to sit or lie in a designated spot. For Whiskey, that’s up front near me.
- Use a comfy mat or towel to make their spot extra inviting.

Keep an Eye on the Weather
Lake days are always better with good weather. Check the forecast before heading out to avoid storms. Whiskey may enjoy the rain, but being caught in a thunderstorm on a boat? No thanks.

Other weather tips:
- Make sure your dog gets breaks in shaded areas or under a canopy.
- Watch out for heat; Whiskey’s golden coat soaks up the sun, so I ensure he stays cool.

Supervise Water Play
Watching your dog enjoy the water is one of the best parts of lake life, but always keep an eye on them when they’re swimming.

Here are some safety measures to follow:
- Stick to calm waters free from boats and strong currents.
- Watch out for hazards like sharp rocks or fishing hooks.

Create a Chill Zone
Every lake dog needs a space to recharge. Whiskey loves relaxing on the boat’s deck after a swim, preferably on a soft towel or mat.

Make your dog’s chill zone comfy:
- If your boat lacks a built-in canopy, bring your own shade.
- Prioritize hydration by offering fresh water regularly.

Respect the Space
Not everyone shares the same love for water or dogs as you and your pup. Keep your dog under control on shared docks, beaches, or boats. Whiskey might charm everyone he meets, but I always ask for permission before letting him approach strangers or their pets.

Capture the Moments
Lake days with your dog are nothing short of magical, so take the time to savor the experience. Whether it’s watching Whiskey launch off the boat or enjoying quiet moments as the sun sets, these are memories to cherish.

Ways to capture the magic:
- Take plenty of photos.
- Laugh at their antics.
- Simply enjoy the moment together.

Final Thoughts

Having a lake dog like Whiskey is one of the most rewarding parts of being a pet parent. He reminds me to live in the moment, laugh more, and never take life—or a good swim—too seriously.

If your pup is ready to make a splash this summer, I hope these tips help you both make the most of your lake days. From one lake dog parent to another, here’s to calm waters, wagging tails, and endless adventures.

Whiskey and I will see you out there!
